  3. Create a calendar

Create a calendar

Create a calendar, choose its type and look, and rename or archive it later.

Create a calendar

Choose Add calendar (+) in the Calendars group of the nav rail, then New calendar…. On a phone, Add calendar is in the calendar switcher. You can also search the command menu (⌘K) for New calendar.

The same menu has Browse public calendars, which opens Discover.

Name it and choose a type

In New calendar, type a name. Press ↑ and ↓ to change the type without leaving the name field.

TypeWhat it adds
BlankA standard calendar you can share and include in other calendars. Starts with the Meeting and Reminder event types.
SubscriptionsA tracker for recurring charges
BirthdaysA tracker that turns each person into a yearly all-day event
HabitsDaily habits and workouts, with your runs
TravelA trip itinerary, with the Flight and Hotel event types. Views stay inside the trip dates.

A calendar's type can change later only to or from Blank. See Track birthdays, subscriptions, habits, and trips for what each tracker does and which types can be shared.

Click the square next to the name to choose letters or an icon, and a color. A new blank calendar starts on a color no other calendar uses.

Finish setup

For Blank, press Enter or choose Create calendar.

For the other types, choose Continue to add starter items: people for Birthdays, subscriptions for Subscriptions, habits and workout plans to tick for Habits, or trip dates for Travel. Only trip dates are required. Press ⌘↵ to create the calendar without adding anything. Choose Back to change the type, or Cancel or press Esc to close without creating.

After the calendar opens, choose Customize in the confirmation to open its settings.

Add event types to a calendar

Open the calendar's editor and expand Event types. Choose Add event type, then pick a type such as Flight or Hotel. The calendar can use it right away. You can add these types to a Blank calendar without changing its calendar type.

Settings → Event types changes the defaults for a type. The calendar editor decides which types that calendar offers.

Rename a calendar or change its look

Open the calendar's menu in the nav rail and choose Open editor. Change the name there, or click the thumbnail to choose letters, an icon, or an image.

Archive a calendar

Open the calendar's menu and choose Archive. The calendar and its items disappear from your views right away. Choose Undo in the confirmation to bring the calendar back.

Later, restore the calendar from Archive in the calendar manager or from Settings → Archive. When deletes an archived calendar permanently after 60 days.

Main, connected calendars, and calendars other people own cannot be archived.
